When I get an email form Yahoo, is it really from Yahoo?

last year I got an email from a group stating that I had won an international contest from Yahoo, headquarters in the UK, I had won a brand new car and a lot of money, but to this day nothing, was this a cruel joke or someone trying to extort money from me.
